WEEE Explained

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) contains hazardous substances which can have a negative impact on the environment and human health if they are disposed of incorrectly. Recycling WEEE also helps to recover valuable resources which therefore reduce the need for raw materials.

By collecting WEEE separately, as a society we can ensure it is sent for specialist treatment and recycling and thereby further protecting our environment.

The WEEE Directive

On the 2nd January 2007 the UK Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) regulations came into force. The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive) is EU legislation which aims to minimise the impact of electrical and electronic goods on the environment, by increasing re-use and recycling and reducing the amount of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) going to landfill.

It seeks to achieve this by making producers of WEEE responsible for financing its collection, treatment, and recovery, and by obliging distributors of WEEE to allow consumers to return WEEE free of charge.
